For the past 20 years, the Lipscomb family has been a part of the life of the South Carolina State Museum, providing vision, leadership and financial support to shape the Museum into the vibrant institution it is today. Throughout the years, many individuals have been inspired by this dedication and the sentiment expressed by Guy Lipscomb, the first chair of the South Carolina Museum Commission.
The Board of Directors of the South Carolina Museum Foundation is proud to announce the creation of a new program to benefit the South Carolina State Museum – “The Lipscomb Society.” Through membership in the Lipscomb Society, individuals can share in the Lipscomb family’s vision and leadership to the State Museum by making a provision for the Museum through a planned gift.
Members of the Lipscomb Society will make commitments through an estate provision, or a planned or deferred gift commitment to the Foundation. Examples of planned gifts include: a bequest in a will or living trust; designating the South Carolina Museum Foundation as the beneficiary of a retirement plan or life insurance policy; a gift that provides the donor with income such as a charitable remainder trust or charitable gift annuity; or a remainder interest gift of a property. Any donor who notifies the South Carolina Museum Foundation that he or she has made this type of gift to the South Carolina Museum Foundation, regardless of the amount, automatically becomes a member.
When asked to use his family’s name for this important endeavor, Guy Lipscomb responded willingly and enthusiastically:
"The new planned giving society will help provide for the growth and improvement of all of the Museum’s present exhibits and the many new ones slated for future development” he said.
“It has always been a goal to build an endowment to help with major shows and exhibits – this society will help make that goal a reality. Most of the exhibits we now enjoy were financed by private support from individuals and corporations.
“I encourage all individuals who treasure their South Carolina heritage, tangible and intangible, to consider including the South Carolina Museum Foundation in their estate plans. The bequests you make today will in all cases help to insure that our grandchildren, even great-grandchildren, will have the opportunity to know and understand the fabric of their culture and history.
“Providing for the South Carolina Museum Foundation in your estate plans enables the Museum to become part of a vibrant and growing investment in the lives of future citizens."
