Planetarium
• 55-foot-diameter domed theater, the largest at any museum or university in the state
• Seating capacity of 200, adequate to seat multiple school classes at a time
• Digital technology, providing virtual reality journeys to the planets and distant galaxies, as well as interactive science, mathematics and history programs based on South Carolina curriculum frameworks for grades K-12
• Environment suitable for recreating accurate representations of celestial phenomena for advanced university-level study
• Connection to NASA satellite for projecting live space missions and sky events such as solar eclipses on the dome
• Collaboration with ETV for satellite uplinks allowing the origination of programming for the ITV network
• Teacher training programs to instruct teachers in the effective use of the facility’s resources
• Entertaining laser art shows, using technology based upon the discoveries of South Carolina’s first Nobel laureate, Dr. Charles H. Townes
• Production facilities to support the educational programming needs of other planetariums in the state.
