Observatory

Our historic 1926 Alvan Clark 12 and 3/8-inch refracting telescope was acquired from Columbia University in NY City.  The vintage telescope is an instrument of professional caliber, designed for detailed direct viewing of a wide variety of celestial objects.

New electronic motors allow computer-driven “GOTO” technology to guide the telescope by computer.  Cameras will allow digital images to be sent to the museum planetarium and outside museum walls via ETV and ITV to South Carolina schools,  homes, and beyond.  This merging of a vintage instrument with 21st Century technology will have an enormous educational impact on our state.
