Museum Media Frequently Asked Questions


Q: I want to do a story about the museum.  How do I set up a visit?

A: Contact our Public Information Staff.  We’ll assist with story development, help with logistics, and  help with suggestions for interviews, photos and access to resources to provide you with the best story we can.

Q: Do you offer free admission for members of the media?

A: We offer free admission to working media on assignment. Contact our Public Information Staff  in advance of your visit to arrange for admission.

Q: May I take photos or video inside the museum?

A: All visitors may take photos and video for their private, personal use only, unless signage indicates otherwise, as is customary in the Lipscomb Art Gallery.  Media should contact the Public Information Staff  in advance to arrange to shoot photos and video that will be used with articles and video programs that include the South Carolina State Museum.  Taking photos or video, including for stock images and other commercial purposes, is prohibited unless authorized in advance by the Public Information Staff.  Some fees may apply.  There also may be some restrictions on use of tripods or supplemental lighting.

Q: May I get photos from the museum to use with my story?

A: Yes.  In most cases we can provide you with digital images of various exhibits or activities at the museum.

Q: I’d like to receive regular news releases from the museum.  How can I do so?

A: Send us an e-mail to sign up for e-mail news releases from the museum.

Q: How can I reach the Public Information Staff if I have more questions?

Q: I’m working on a story about X, do you have a subject matter expert I can interview?

A: Yes, frequently.  The South Carolina State Museum has a wealth of expertise on a variety of topics, including South Carolina art, history, natural history, science and technology and more.  Please contact the Public Information Staff to schedule an interview with one of our experts or to get more information.

Q: I’m doing a story on X, do you have something I could use for a visual?

A: The South Carolina State Museum has a vast collection of artifacts.  In addition, many of our galleries or exhibits make ideal backdrops for news and feature stories.   To arrange a shoot or to inquire about items for visuals, please contact the Public Information Staff.
