The Traveling Exhibits Program at the South Carolina State Museum provides museums, art centers, universities and other qualified institutions with high quality, affordable traveling exhibitions. TEP provides an array of stimulating shows for institutions of any size, from large exhibitions designed for major museums to smaller, South Carolina-specific exhibits for local museums and galleries. The TEP goal is to advance appreciation for and understanding of the art, history and cultures of South Carolina by offering exhibits on a variety of topics and disciplines, ranging from the turbulent history of Native Americans in South Carolina, to unique photography and contemporary fine art. |

The Great Charleston Earthquake, 1886
This exhibit examines the most destructive earthquake ever recorded in the eastern United States. The quake occurred near Charleston, SC on August 31, 1886. Discover details about the devastation and how rescue efforts were deployed during the 1800’s. The exhibit also teaches how to protect yourself today should an earthquake occur.

The Great Charleston Earthquake, 1886 was developed by the South Carolina State Museum with research, collaboration and assistance from Susan Millar Williams and Stephen G. Hoffius, authors of “Upheaval in Charleston: Earthquake and Murder on the Eve of Jim Crow” (University of Georgia Press, 2011) and the Emergency Management Division of South Carolina.
The exhibit comes with a tour that is aligned with S.C. education standards for those venues wishing to attract school groups and also includes materials for an entertaining tent building project to be used during family or school programs.
A DVD is included that includes additional information on the history of the quake and about the geological make up of South Carolina and why the state is prone to so many earthquakes.

Art/Humanity: Contemporary African American Fiber Art
New each year!
Art/Humanity is the fifth annual quilt and fiber art exhibition presented each year as a component of the North Charleston Arts Festival. Curated by Torreah “Cookie” Washington, works included in the traveling show were inspired by a quote from African American actor, Brock Peters. “In Art there is compassion, in compassion there is humanity, with humanity there is generosity and love.”
African American art quilters from across the nation were invited to explore and depict themes of Art, Humanity, Compassion, Service, Generosity and Love in cloth through traditional and non-traditional fiber techniques.
The 15 exhibiting artists include Cassandra Allen, Pauline and Qydezia Barrett, Lenora Brown, Cynthelia Cephas, Arianne King Comer, Jacqueline Dukes, Cherrymae Golston, Phyllis Harris, Esther Iverem, Jacqueline Johnson, Antonia Torres, Rosalind Spann, Torreah “Cookie” Washington and Michelle Willis.
Specs:
• 22 fiber art pieces with hanging rods. Sizes range from 12” x 12” to 62” x 78”. Exhibit inventory with specific sizes available via tep@scmuseum.org.
• Approximately 64 linear feet but smaller works can be double hung
• Gallery lighting sensitive for fiber work required
• CDC approximately 10 minute repeating program illustrates additional work by the artists which is not included in the traveling show.

2011-2012 Palmetto Hands Fine Craft Exhibition
New each year!
Fine craft artists and artisans from across the state were invited to submit work for the state’s only juried fine craft competition and exhibition. Organized annually by the City of North Charleston Cultural Arts Department with assistance from the SC Artisans Center in Walterboro, the show is presented as a component of the North Charleston Arts Festival.
Denise Butler, co-founder and former Executive Director and Board member of the SC Artisans Center juried the show and selected 19 pieces of exceptional quality to travel the state. Works in wood, fiber, glass, metal, clay and 3D mixed media are represented. This show travels easily, comes with knock-down pedestals and other display materials. A CD is included with print ready labels.
This compact exhibit is available for in-state exhibition, only at a reduced fee.

The Lonely Shadow: Silhouette Art by Clay Rice

Original illustrations from “The Lonely Shadow,” a new children’s book created by nationally-known silhouette artist Clay Rice are now available to travel. In this exhibit, Clay Rice blends the elegant black and white silhouette tradition with a colorful world in the story of friendship between a lonely shadow and a little boy.
Rice is as much a folklorist as he is a visual artist, collecting stories from people he meets and preserving their tales. He has listened to stores about root doctors, folk tales and ghost stories. These stories most recently influenced his career through his own story and book, “The Lonely Shadow.” Mr. Rice is available for programs at your venue.

Mud, Sweat and Cheers: Football in the Palmetto State
Bring the excitement, drama, history and fun of American football into your gallery. The exhibit includes information about both high school and college football and features Carolina players who have gone on to the professional game. “This exhibit examines the history of the game in the Palmetto State,” says Fritz Hamer, chief curator of history at the South Carolina State Museum. “It looks at how the rules have changed over the 20th century and examines how football expanded from being largely a collegiate sport in the first half of the century into the huge spectator sport it has become since the 1960’s.”
