Responsible for militaria, especially WW II and Civil War, sports memorabilia and objects from any time period, and archaeological material, such as arrowheads(points) and pottery.

Responsible for review of all works of art including fine, folk and other such objects created in South Carolina or made by a native South Carolinian. This includes paintings, prints, photographs, drawings, pottery, quilts, baskets, furniture, sculpture and anything else that is hand-made.

Responsible for artifacts related to the following cultural groups; women, children and  African-Americans.  Contact regarding requests for information about  clothing, textiles and dolls. Can answer questions or make referrals regarding conservation of textiles.

Oversees the administration of the collections department staff. Any requests for information regarding fossils, snakes, bugs, rocks, sea shell, birds, environmental issues, etc should be directed to the natural history curator.

 
Elaine Nichols recently traveled to Guinea and Sierra Leone to study the connections between South Carolina and West Africa.
